student visits

Exercises for students (when visiting foreign schools):

Write reports in www.ejournal.fi/moi

Suggestions for topics:

1. Travelblog (Where have you been and what have you seen)

2. Typical school day in … (Write about the school day in that country you have visited.)

3. Traveling (How did you travel, what was it like?)

4. Small things – big issues (When you travel or when you go to school or live your everyday life you make small choices all the time, how do they become big issues? For example, if you chose to fly instead of taking the train, or if you ride your bike to school instead of taking the bus, or if you pack your lunch in foil instead of a paper bag, and so on.)

Video Conference November 11, 2009

GLOBAL EDUCATION PROJECT 2009-2010

VIDEO CONFERENCE 11/2009

Time: November 11, 2009 at 7pm EET

Place: Conference Room in www.ejournal.fi/moi

Present: Silke Groth, Ilpo Halonen, Titta Suvanto, Annika Ruohonen, Aida Skarbaliene, Jovita Ranauskiene, Rita Barkauskiene

1.     It was decided that each student will have three articles ready in the ejournal before Christmas. Articles can be found in the respective folders:

-       Introductions

-       My Environment

-       Climate Change

Students will also comment on each other’s articles.

2.     It was agreed that Danish and Lithuanian teachers will receive their traveling money from September 2009 as soon as possible.

3.     Our project has applied for Quality Label in the eTwinning page. The projects which are awarded Quality Label win prizes such as trips to southern Europe for teachers. It was agreed that it is important to update both our eTwinning pages and our ejournal.

4.     Traveling plans were made for spring.

-       It was suggested that the Finns would travel immediately after Easter 2010 and take a bus to Denmark and stay in Silute, Lithuania for one night on the way.

-       It was suggested that Danes and Lithuanias would visit Porvoo during the last week of May.

5.     Plans for spring projects were also discussed. Most likely students will make a film together in the spring, for example weather forecasts.

6.     Next meeting will be a video conference in the conference room in www.ejournal.fi/moi on Wednesday, December 16 at 7 pm EET. Spring projects and traveling will be discussed in that meeting.

Video Conference

On a Thursday evening (Oct10) members of the Global Education had a video conference in the conference room of the ejournal Moi. There were 6 people online: Rita, Jovita, Silke, Titta, Annika and Ilpo Halonen (our ejournal coach, a teacher from Vihti). Ilpo answered our questions about ejournal and we learned more functions of the ejournal. We also went through some of the things we had learned before but which are a bit difficult to remember, for example how to move articles to different folders.

Danish students have now written their Introductions in Moi. Finnish students have written both Introductions and My Environment tasks. Lithuanian students are just about to start writing their Introdcutions. For Finns and Danes there will be a break in writing articles in October since the Finnish teachers have furloughs and Silke and Annika are travelling. Lithuanians have good time in catching up during that time. In November we will start commenting on each other’s articles and writing our main tasks under the topic ‘Cilmate Change’.

Impressions left after Week in Pääskytie school, Porvoo town, Finland

Just arrived we were warmly accepted in Pääskytie School where we later discussed about the eJournal possibilities, the circumstances to work on project. We stated our opinion to other members of project.

On Tuesday we attended the international conference about Baltic Sea in Helsinki. It was relevant to our project “Global Education”. We pick up new ideas, thoughts that we are going to share with our students in Silute, Lithuania.

On Wednesday afternoon we worked with teacher who taught us how to connect to the eJournal. We learned how to write articles and correct them inserting a table, photos, links and other necessary attributes. We tried to publish articles and we succeeded. We worked using student’s rights.

On Thursday and Friday we used administrator’s rights and learned how to create users’ names, grant specific rights and passwords. We also created and commented articles written by our colleagues. We learned how to upload photos, videos and publish them. The week spent in Pääskytie School was extremely necessary and useful for our project, because we know now how to work with the eJournal and we can create users’ names for our students. They are able to communicate with friends of the project, to publish their articles in this journal, to share their impressions about “Global Education”.

All knowledge gained in cooperation with the Danish and Finnish teachers has significant benefit to us working on the project “Global Education”. Our moto – „Small things – big issues”.

Week 37 – work around the clock

Picture

One must be a fool to work around the clock – or fortunate like we are. Being fortunate I mean our large sum of money from Nordplus Junior, our new partners from Lithuania and Danmark who got an opportunity to visit us so quickly plus our headmasters support in everything. And ofcourse our family menbers who didn’t see us almost at all in the whole week.

In every day after the normal schedule we started to study and learn things we need for our global education project. Things about EJournal, climate issues and Baltic sea. If we were lucky we got something to eat before seven pm. And after and over a good dinner we got to know each other better. There are plenty of things I would have liked to show and do here in Porvoo, but there will be other times – quite soon.

Here are some pictures taken in this hectic week. You can see us learning to use eJournal, Ilpo Halonen teaching, our students being interwieved to radio, Titta driving a mini bus in the first time of her life, Annika and Silke talking about their iPhones, Roberta, Jovita and Rita in Baltic Sea conference and a sad picture of our sea – full of cyanobacterial blooms.

I do hope our partners didn’t find our arrangements too heavy. After all I share Annika’s opinion: it all gave more than it took.

To be continued..
